Listen and transform
If you are seeking PRACTICAL SKILLS such as methods to cope with stressful events or complicated relationships, I can provide a variety of methods and resources in a short term treatment plan.
If you are seeking the ROOT CAUSE of re-occurring problems in life or of causes of irrational feelings, I bring knowledge of the human mind and knowledge of the complexities of interpersonal relationships.
The Bio-psycho-social model views symptoms as sometimes multi-causal. Biological refers to any heredity, genetic/family predispositions to emotions and behavioral traits. Psychological refers to one’s unique temperament that has been present since childhood; such as introvert/extrovert. Social refers to any positive or negative events in the environment that has shaped one’s belief system. This may include experiences in the immediate/extended family, neighborhood issues, school, community, culture, or workplace environment.
Beliefs about oneself, about others and about the world can affect mood. Sometimes fine-tuning any that are reinforcing negative experiences may be helpful.
If you are seeking A NON-JUDGMENTAL EXPERIENCE, a core belief of the social work profession is the inherent dignity of each individual and a core value is the right to self determination. I find that emphasizing my role as collaborative instead of authoritative can ease the intensity for those with trepidation about starting therapy. Being sensitive and responsive to vulnerability and shame, reduces fear of judgment.
I foster self determination by creating an atmosphere where one understands themselves better, learns clarity in their choices and maintains the responsibility for change.
